Based on natural phenomenon we describe strata as elements that are part of a single system with multiple views. An important characteristic is the sedimentation process that occurs in time and that can be observed in the leveling of strata. Strata are the hard and compact result of sediment accumulation. Each stratum can be identified from the whole system for its slight contour change.
Different stratum contours occur with the influence of materials’ qualities and other external conditions. Different slops, drifts and twist in the strata shape are presented as an effect of those changing qualities and conditions.

Experimenting the abstract machine

With our keyword, stratification, as the engine we sought to transfer the nature of what it means to generate our abstract machine. The behavior of the abstract encapsulated interpretations of our keyword, such as, “from different folding (stratum) things will spread out (architectonic elements)”; corresponding to this we tried to implement different stratum behavior on different levels with periodical changeable conditions interpreting them to architectonic elements and capturing different materials quality clarifying the process of sedimentation and the tectonic quality of the main body..
Inner Spaces and linking processes occur continuously spreading out from periodical tectonic structure over all the system. Surfaces correspond with the process and are interpreted in the structure’s development, there for sediment beds flowing above each others in different procedures appear.

Inclination - Drifting - Twisting - Superposition - Bending - Melting


Here we state the different stratum in the process of creating the model where each one adopted a particular architectural role.
Strata 001 - base of the model as a foundation, ground floor and interior
Strata 002 - first floor slab, interior, interior architecture elements such as stairs and benches
Strata 003 – shell structure, walk-through roof, stairs, openings for light


The idea of the folly is to be a structure that emerges and melts into the ground; therefore we are considering a material that can be presented in many different ways, from being rock-like, heavy and hard, to being bendable and smooth, a material that has the possibility of blocking and letting light through. As an overall idea of what the structure will be made of we are taking concrete as our starting point, and investigating the possibilities of this material.
High performability concrete: material allows unparalleled flexibility in structural design
Translucent concrete: it’s thinnest sheets of the new concrete transmits sunlight, providing sufficient light to create a glow inside the structure
Color changing concrete: new type of system that allows you to dynamically display patterns, numbers and text in the surface of a concrete slab
Glass: art glass panels are finely crafted inserts available in a wide range of sizes to precisely fit windows and openings

Project aims to find an effective solution that can realize flexible and very active shapes (stratas) form the very hard and heavy-looking material and structure.
Representing an interactive structure with emergent properties that condenses in the final architectural form.

I appreciate your research on contemporary concrete use. I think you mentioned high performance concrete. FYI: The University of Kassel has done some interesting research on the use of Ultra High Performance concrete:
I would love to see your thoughts in more detail, especially in terms of plans, as we talked last time. Particularly the section but also the plans.
